What We Believe
We joyfully extend an “extravagant welcome” to everyone in the Bangor area, whether resident or visitor, affirming the dignity and worth of each person as a Child of God. While we cherish our stained glass windows, we are equally proud of the two clear windows that allow us to look out into the world and respond to the needs of our community. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.
Faith in Action and Ministry
For more than 190 years, we have been living our faith through service. Our commitment to the community is exemplified by housing and supporting the Bangor Food Pantry for more than 40 years. We played a key role in creating and continue to support the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter. Additionally, our members helped establish and remain involved with the Shaw House, a shelter for homeless teenagers. Each month, we provide a free luncheon for anyone in need. Annually, our outreach committee selects a special project to support. Past efforts have included assisting the Good Shepherd Food Pantry and building homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Statement on Racial Justice
We affirm the worth of all persons and acknowledge God’s love for all people, as Jesus taught us. We are committed to combating racism in all its forms, standing with, working with, and listening to people of color. We also hold ourselves and others accountable for actions, nurturing a culture of love and respect.
Open and Affirming Statement
Hammond Street Congregational Church upholds our Open and Affirming Statement (ONA), adopted in 2003: “We welcome all people, regardless of background, circumstances, ethnicity, family configuration, gender identity, or sexual orientation, into our faith community. We affirm the worth of all persons and acknowledge God’s love for all people.”
